Women are strong and independent and are a productive part of society participating in every facet of life shoulder to shoulder with men. However there are still some men out there who do not consider that a woman just like them has their own rights. Following are some of the twisted stories which come under domestic violence portraying this thought process in men with more clarity.
We are not saying all men are like that but there is a certainty of a thought that women are still viewed as weak by them. They are thought not capable enough to fend for themselves if they are attacked and that they have no right to stand up for themselves.
This is the narrative and thought process which made Christopher O’Kroley fatally shot his coworker Caroline Nosal with a gun which eventually killed her. Nosal denied his romantic advances making O’Kroley take the extreme step of taking the life of another human being. Apparently O’Kroley wanted more out of the relationship and she simply refused him and in the process hurt his misplaced sense of self-respect.
This incident is one of the many such which are taking place against women at an alarmingly high rate. It is simply easier to murder the woman who refuses inappropriate advances than to think in a reasonable manner. Similar to the above incident another woman, Janese Talton-Jackson got murdered by Charles Mckinney as she refused a date with him. There are several such incidents in the United States where a woman got killed by refusing a man.
These murders are still viewed as isolated incidents rather than being accepted as a typical case of domestic violence. By disregarding such events the society is inadvertently turning a blind eye to a problem that will only increase in magnitude over time if left unchecked. For this reason there is a blog created When Women Refuse where such incidents are highlighted to bring into attention these incidents to make the masses appreciate these crimes as an important cultural issue which needs to be solved.
It is very difficult to ascertain an accurate number of cases, where a woman got brutally attacked on the basis of rejecting a guy. These incidents are mostly under reported and never make it to the mainstream media. This is the reason we are not at all seeing the whole picture and in certain cases the murder is not tracked to the motive behind it.
According to the director of gender violence and rights at the International Center for Research on Women these incidents need to be reported in the mainstream media. She appreciated the efforts of the blog When Women Refuse and claimed that it served as one of the biggest data set for this type of violence.
This is a big step forward to make these incidents be brought into the attention of media so as to make people understand that violence is not the way to say no to a refusal.
