Its hard enough being a teenager, but being a Muslim teenager in the United States takes the cake! Especially after the reign of Donald Trump began, hate crime increased significantly. Trump’s demeanor towards people of other ethnic and religious backgrounds is quite questionable. Now, people think it is OK to be less sensitive toward topics that should be “handled with care”.
17-year old Lamyaa, a resident from Pennsylvania was the most recent target of hate and ignorance. Engaged in an online conversation between friends, Lamyaa found herself in the middle of current political discussion. Realizing that she was a Muslim Arab, a mutual friend in the conversation responded to her comments in a way that did nothing but signify the writer’s ignorance
If it were anyone else, the initial reaction would be to respond to the ignorant comment in the same manner. However, Lamyaa decided to take the highroad. Instead of letting the hurtful remark slide, she contacted her father, who lives in Saudi Arabia, and ask her if it was okay with him for her to remove her scarf. Her father’s response was so unbelievable. It immediately went viral on Twitter gathering over 320k likes and 147k shares.
17-Year old Lamyaa, Muslim Arabian woman living in Pennsylvania.
She participated in a friendly online conversation with friends, when a random mutual “friend” made a hurtful comment.
Instead of responding in the same manner, Lamyaa went to her father for advice. She asked him if it would be okay for her to remove her Hijab (a traditional veil worn by Muslim women which covers the head and chest).
Her father’s response was amazing!
The internet was quick to unite behind Lamyaa and support her.
Being a trooper, Lamyaa made sure that people knew that she had no intention of taking off her Hijab. For many Muslim women, a hijab is more than just a head scarf, it is an identity.
Most people were supportive of Lamyaa and her situation, however there were some who had other opinions.
Lamyaa played it smart once again, and made sure that everything was clarified.
Through out this whole incident, one thing is clear. Lamyaa is very fortunate to have a father that loves her and accepts her for who she is, hijab or no hijab.
Lamyaa handled the situation very well, and for that we tip our hats. Way to go Lamyaa!
