It is often believed that there are two kind of workers in the job market, those who work hard and those who work smart. People who work hard may be loyal to their job or their own business but may not be able to rise further much, while there is another group which is always in search of shortcuts to make big bucks in short amount of time. It takes a balanced approach and certain voluntary actions that you need to internalize in your personality to become financially more stable. These steps are discussed in detail as following:
1. Take time out to appreciate yourself of the good work
Often times a worker may become shy of taking the credit for a job well done so as to appear more of a team player. This attitude is wrong since downplaying your own abilities will never do you any good on the corporate ladder. Besides as they say that credit should be given where it is due similarly one should take the credit for work they did instead of attributing their hard work to a stroke of good fortune or coincidence.
This will also embolden you to take on more responsibility and be trusted with more authority in the workplace since you are confident about your professional abilities.
2. Working for no Remuneration
It may be argued that one may opt to work for free as it is still a great learning opportunity and you might gain experience but this may portray you as professionally weak. It indicates that you are contributing to the prosperity of the company without deeming yourself fit for compensation of your efforts. Only if you truly feel that the gained knowledge and experience is more than the effort involved should you opt for working for free, otherwise all work should be properly rewarded.
3. Shying away from conversation pertaining to promotion
If you feel your work and responsibility has expanded considerably and you are taking on more work it is high time you brought the topic of promotion to the concerned authority. It is only fair to ask that your salary must reflect the load of work you are undertaking. More often than not female employees are afraid of bringing this topic up for fear of rejection or condemnation.
According to research, pick first half of Friday to bring this conversation up with the respective human resource manager or concerned personnel. Mondays are a worst time to talk about such sensitive subject.
4. Time is Money
This clichAd statement is true especially in this fast paced corporate world where deadlines are becoming increasingly difficult to be met. Efficient and effective time management is actually a very desirable trait in a working class individual.
According to Peter Chochrane, an Information Technology researcher, some people are willing to save some money at the expense of time available while the other group may expend money to save some time. The group which is more productive is the one which finds money dispensable to save more time. At the end of the day time is a resource which you can never redeem later on.
Efficient use of time and enhancing it via spending money will make you more time efficient. For example purchasing groceries, dinner and paying bills online instead of personally executing all these chores by yourself.
5. Going above and beyond the call of duty
World renowned entrepreneur, Richard Branson explains that it is very important to go beyond the expectations of your customer to make yourself stand out from the crowd. If you are also going about your work like the other worker you will not be able to connect at that more deeper and meaningful level which is necessary for professional growth.
