When it comes to health and medical facts there is so much knowledge in the world that we cannot even begin to list all of those facts. Some of these come to us through first-hand medical practioners like our GP, specialists, nutritionists and dieticians. Some facts seep into our knowledge through media means like social media, print media and articles over the internet. Many others yet are hand-me-down facts that we steadfastly believe in because our moms believed in them because their moms told them so.
What if we were to tell you that some of the facts you stand by are actually not a 100% accurate? We asked our readers some of the medical facts they believe in and then talked to experts if those are actually true. Some of these are as follows. Do you see any that you may believe to be accurate?
“I am extremely unhealthy because I am 15 pounds overweight.” –Meisha, 31
Just because you weigh a lot or are larger than the average person does not mean that you are also unhealthy. A study by Dr. Steven N. Blair and his associates determines the rate of mortality between an overweight person who exercises regularly and a person who fits the BMI scale according to his specification but does not exercise regularly. “Before I got pregnant myself I believed that pregnancy lasted 9 months.” –Amy, 29
Every woman is different and her body works differently. By extension of this fact, every pregnancy works differently as well. While some women do carry their baby to the 40 week mark before they deliver, it is a fact that isn’t exactly set in stone for a majority of women nowadays. So much so, that only 5% of the babies delivered actually arrive on their EDD.
“Our family only eats organic vegetables and fruits because they are free of chemicals and pesticides.” –Nathan, 33
Organic industry boomed after various studies and reports revealed exactly what harmful chemicals and pesticides are used to grown our vegetables and fruits. However, just because a packet of fruit says ‘organic’ on the label doesn’t mean that it is chemical-free. There are more than 20 chemicals which have been given the green-signal by the US government to be utilized by organic food producers.
“I really believed that we used only 10% of our brains.” –Caleb, 26
This phrase would have been thrown at you multiple times during your life. It is also used as an example by almost everyone in an authoritative position to point out how extraordinary the human brain is. No matter how much this statement is asserted, it is simply not true. Scientists and neurologists have proven conducted experiments which show that the entire brain is in function in the span of an individual’s lifetime. That is what it’s for and that is what it does.
“I have never used a microwave in my life because it gives you cancer.” –Nate, 32
Let us explain how microwaves work. Radiations are produced through micro-waves which heat up water molecules inside our foods which warms it up. These do not change the composition, molecular or chemical structure of the food in any way and definitely do not cause cancer.
